Program Objectives
On completion of the programme, the professional nurse-midwife graduate shall be able to:

• Provide comprehensive, culturally acceptable, evidence-based nursing and midwifery care to individuals, groups, families   and communities at all levels of care in a variety of settings.
• Collaborate with other members of the health care team to improve health care delivery services.
• Use evidence-based practise improving the quality of nursing and midwifery care for sustainable health and development of the community.
• Demonstrate competence in providing health information and counselling to individuals, families, groups and communities.
• Demonstrate professional norms/standards, ethics and values of nursing and midwifery practice.
• Participate actively in professional growth and development for self and others.
• Act as an agent for change and promote quality improvement in the performance of nursing and midwifery services.
• Take a leadership role in planning, implementing and evaluation of individual and community health nursing and midwifery care.
• Apply critical thinking in the nursing and midwifery practice.
• Participate in supervising and monitoring quality of nursing and midwifery care in various health care settings.
• Participate actively in the promotion of nursing/midwifery education and practice nationally and internationally.

Courses offered under the program

ECO 1100:  Communication Studies I
The aim of the course is to enable learners acquire knowledge of various study and communication skills and techniques that will facilitate their learning process.

BNM 1101:  Chemistry for Health Sciences
The aim of the course is to introduce the learner to the chemical processes as they affect the human body. The learner is also taught about the reactions of the various medications on the normal functioning and adaptability of the body

EMT 1104:  Basic Mathematics
The aims of this course are as follows: –

• To lay the foundations for the appropriate use of mathematical concepts and techniques to modelling and problem solving in the sciences.
• To develop skills and habits of mind for problem formulation, analysis, solution interpretation and generalization.
• To introduce the use of information technology for simulation and experimenting with mathematical models.
• To develop statistical techniques with which students can handle data-oriented problems in their core field of study

BNM 1103:  Fundamentals of Nursing I
This course provides a knowledge base for the performance of skills utilizing the nursing process.  It provides the learners with an opportunity to learn and perform skills in basic nursing.

BNM 11X3:  Clinical Fundamentals of Nursing I
This course is designed to allow the learner to demonstrate the understanding of nursing skills and attitudes crucial to the practice of Nursing and Midwifery.

BNM 1104:  Human Anatomy and Physiology I
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge of the structure of the human body. The information is important to enable the nurse to observe any structural changes that are deviations from the norm when dealing with the well and sick individuals during Nursing and Midwifery care services.

BNM 1105:  Psychology for Health
This course is designed to enable the learners to acquire knowledge of general psychological theories and concepts and their relevance to nursing practice in order to assist the learners to provide holistic nursing care to individuals, families, groups and communities.

BNM 1106:  Sociology for Health
This course enables the learners to understand the basic concepts and theories used in Sociology and their relevance to the healthcare field.

ECO 1200:  Communication Studies II
The course is designed to enable learners demonstrate different types of academic writing skills and integration of writing, speaking skills and competence in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).

BNM 1201:  Human Anatomy and Physiology II
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge of the structure and organs of the human body. The information is important to enable the nurse to observe any structural changes that are deviations from the normal when dealing with the well and sick individuals during Nursing and Midwifery care services.

BNM 1202:  Medical Microbiology
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge of the structure of micro-organisms in relation to causation, spread, and control as well as prevention of diseases among the population. The information is important to enable the nurse to observe any outbreaks and their trends and measures to apply in prevention and control of the diseases when dealing with the well and sick individuals during Nursing and Midwifery care services.

BNM 1203:  Medical Parasitology
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge of the structure of parasites in relation to causation, spread, and control as well as prevention of diseases among the population. The information is important to enable the nurse to observe any outbreaks and their trends and measures to apply in prevention and control of the diseases when dealing with the well and sick individuals during Nursing and Midwifery care services.

BNM 1204:  Community Health Nursing I
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire basic knowledge and skills, utilizing the community health nursing process in providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups and the community.

BNM 1205:  Fundamentals of Nursing II
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge skills utilizing the nursing process. It provides the learner with an opportunity to learn perform and apply basic nursing skills and attitudes crucial to the practice of Nursing.

BNM 12X5:  Clinical Fundamentals of Nursing II
This course is designed to enable the learner to demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitude essential to the practice of basic nursing care utilizing the nursing process.

BNM 1206:  Physics for Health Sciences
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge on basic concepts of physics and assist the learner to apply the concepts with respect to Nursing and Midwifery Sciences.

BNM 2300:  Medical-Surgical Nursing I (Acute Illness)
This course is designed to provide knowledge, skills and attitude in the management of acute medical and surgical conditions affecting various body systems. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept, activities of living and self-care theories in the provision of nursing care.

BNM 23X0:  Clinical Medical-Surgical I
This course is to provide experience for the learners to apply theory into clinical practice and demonstrate the application of physiology and therapeutic interventions in the care of patients with acute illnesses. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept, activities of living and self-care theories in the provision of nursing care.

BNM2301:  Human Nutrition
This course is designed to ensure that learners acquire knowledge on human nutrition and utilize the information in the management of clients with nutritional problems. Emphasis is put on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept.

BNM 2302:  Biochemistry
This course introduces learners to the basic principles of the Biochemistry of the human body. The information is designed to enable learners to understand human biochemistry as related to the disease processes.

BNM 2303:  Pharmacology I

This course enables learners to acquire knowledge of pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics.  The course presents essential principles in which learners will develop beginning skills of prescribing listed drugs and administering therapeutic agents to individuals. Learners are also introduced to the general principles of the actions of medicines in the systems of the body.

BNM 2304:  Community Health Nursing II
This course is designed to enable learners to provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative care to the community utilizing primary health care concepts and the community health nursing process

BNM 23X4:  Clinical Community Health Nursing II
The clinical course is designed to provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative care to clients utilizing the community health nursing process and primary health care concept. Learners will be exposed to under-five, school health, family planning clinics and home health care.

BNM 2305:  Professionalism and Bioethics
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge of professionalism and bioethics, which they can apply in dealing with personal ethical issues and professional behaviour in nursing and midwifery practice.

BNM 2400:  Gender Issues and Health

This course is designed to enable the learners to analyse biological, psychosocial, economical, political, technological factors and traditional and cultural practices affecting males and females’ health. Emphasis will be placed on health promotion, equality, equity and resource distribution and increasing access to care for both males and females within a health care delivery system. The nursing process will be utilized within a Primary Health Care Framework.

BNM 2401:  Principles and Practice of Education
The course will prepare the learner for their teaching responsibility in nursing and midwifery practice. It will enable learners to develop beginning skills of teaching to be applied to individuals, groups and communities in various settings. Pedagogical and andragogical principles of teaching and learning will be discussed.

BNM 2402:  Introduction to Counseling
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge on the main theoretical approaches to counselling/clinical psychology to enable them to apply interactive and interpersonal skills in all relationships in clinical and social contexts.

BNM 2403:  Medical-Surgical Nursing II (Chronic Illness)
This course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms of disease processes and the management of chronic illnesses and ophthalmic conditions. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept, activities of living and self-care theories in the provision of nursing care.

BNM 24X3:  Clinical Medical Surgical II
This course is designed to enable learners to apply theory into clinical practice and demonstrate the application of physiology and therapeutic interventions in the care of patients with chronic and ophthalmic conditions. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept, activities of living and self-care theories in the provision of nursing care.

BNM 2404:  HIV and AIDS
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge on HIV and AIDS to understand the preventive measures of HIV and AIDS in working with individuals, families and communities within the health care delivery system.

BNM 2405:  Introduction to Statistics
This course is designed to provide basic statistics to assist learners in understanding measurement, production, use and analysis of data in research.

BNM 2406:  Pharmacology II
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge of pharmacological agents acting on the nervous, reproductive, endocrine, integumentary systems.  The course presents essential principles in which learners will develop beginning skills of prescribing listed drugs and administering therapeutic agents to individuals.

BNM 3500:  Psychiatric Nursing
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that will assist them in managing patients with mental health disorders. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept.

BNM 35X0:  Clinical Psychiatric Nursing
This course is to provide experience for the learners to apply theory into clinical practice and demonstrate the application of physiology and therapeutic interventions in the care of clients with mental health disorders. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process and primary health care concept.

BNM 3501:  Paediatric Nursing
This course is designed to enable learners to gain knowledge, skills and attitudes that will assist them in providing care to children applying information gained in other disciplines utilizing the nursing process.

BNM 35X1:  Clinical Paediatric Nursing
This course is designed to enable learners to provide comprehensive nursing care to sick children utilizing the knowledge, skills and attitude gained in BNM 3501 and other disciplines.

BNM 3502:  Medical-Surgical Nursing III (High Dependency Nursing)
This course is designed to enable learners to gain knowledge skills and attitudes that will assist them in the provision of high dependency nursing care to clients/patients with medical, surgical and gynaecological conditions and those undergoing theatre procedures utilizing the nursing process.

BNM 35X2:  Clinical Medical-Surgical Nursing III
This course is designed to enable learners to apply knowledge gained in BNM 3502 and other disciplines in the management of clients/patients requiring high dependency nursing in intensive care units and theatre and those with gynaecological conditions utilizing the nursing process. Learners will also be exposed to the outpatient and casualty departments.

BNM 3503:  Research Methodology and Report Writing
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge in research processes and methods.  This will enable the learners to critique research reports, conduct and disseminate research work, and utilize evidence-based research findings in planning and implementing nursing/midwifery care.

BNM 3504:  Community Health Nursing III
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge and skills to provide preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative care to individuals, families, and communities in different settings utilising the community health nursing process.

BNM 35X4:  Clinical Community Health Nursing III
This clinical course is designed to enable learners to provide preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative care to individuals, families and communities utilising the community health nursing process.

BNM 3505:  Health Services Management
This course is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge on theories, principles and practices of management in managing various health care services.

BNM 3600:  Anatomy and Physiology of Obstetrics
This course is designed to build on the anatomy and physiology learned in order to provide learners with a basis for understanding processes of conception and the changes which occur in pregnancy, labour, puerperium, and embryology and in the neonate.

BNM 3601:  Midwifery Part I
To enable learners to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant for the management of pregnant mothers and their families. Emphasis is on the application of the midwifery management process in effecting appropriate care and referral.

BNM 36X1:  Clinical Midwifery Part I
This course is designed to enable the learner to apply knowledge, skills and attitude gained in Anatomy and Physiology of Obstetrics and Midwifery Part I in the management of mothers during antenatal, labour and delivery and puerperium utilizing the midwifery management process Emphasis are placed on critical thinking as a basis for clinical decision-making and prevention of complications.

BNM 4800:  Midwifery Part II
This course is designed to enable the learner to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant for the management of mothers and their families during pregnancy, labour and delivery and puerperium. Emphasis is on the application of the midwifery management process in effecting appropriate care and referral.

BNM 48X0:  Clinical Midwifery Part II
This course builds on the concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes acquired in Low-Risk midwifery and clinical placement.  Emphasis is placed on the recognition of clients with complications and appropriate individualized and culturally acceptable management to prevent maternal deaths.  The Midwifery management process continues to be used, in managing mothers with complications. Emphasis is placed on an individualized and family centred approach to care.

BNM 4801:  Neonatology
This course is designed to build on the concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes acquired in Anatomy and Physiology of Obstetrics, and postnatal Clinical Midwifery in managing a neonate utilizing the midwifery management process.

BNM 48X1:  Clinical Neonatology
The clinical course is designed to offer learners opportunities to apply knowledge gained in Midwifery Part I and Part II and Neonatology managing the neonate.  The midwifery management process is used to identify and manage common complications of the Neonate. Emphasis is placed on an individualized and family-centred approach to care.

BNM 48X2:  Community Midwifery
The course will provide learners with an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the provision of community midwifery and district management. Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology of Obstetrics, Midwifery Part I and Part II and Neonatology will build a base for examining their role in the prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
